Earth Day may be a distant memory for some, but team members at ScienceFirst continue to take steps to help the environment. Whether recycling plastic bottles, bringing lunch in reusable containers, or reducing the amount of photocopies and paper used each day, team members have committed to small steps at home and the office to promote a greener, and healthier, environment.

The ongoing efforts are part of a wave of momentum at ScienceFirst, where a major Earth Day initiative spurred team members to voluntarily pledge simple steps to help the environment. Dubbing April as Earth Month, Michelle “Glod” Feingold, senior graphic designer and team lead for the EarthFirst initiative, challenged colleagues to change a habit or try something new that would make the Earth a cleaner, more sustainable planet. With enthusiastic support from company founders Ed Jarbath and Andrew Whelton, MD, Michelle has made ScienceFirst’s Earth Day celebration an annual event.

“Our Earth Day activities have included cleanups of area parks as well as the small river and executive campus outside our office,” said Ed, managing director of ScienceFirst. “In the past, team members have committed to recycle and raise awareness through community programs. Our ScienceFirst culture continues to support green initiatives and maintains a keen awareness of our role in keeping the environment healthy.”

The team’s environmentally friendly commitments were made on a Tree of Pledges, developed by Michelle and ScienceFirst’s design department, which invited colleagues to populate bare tree “branches” with pledges written on recycled paper “leaves.” Pledges included commitments to recycle more vigilantly, contribute to a home compost unit, and join a community environmental advocacy group. As the tree’s branches became full of leaves, it became a symbol of how the team’s pledges could make the Earth a greener place to live.

Michelle noted that the simple steps contained on the pledges will help combat pollution, reduce reliance on landfills, and keep the Earth healthy. Although issues such as climate change, global warming, and ozone depletion may seem overwhelming at times, the message many team members learned was that simple changes and small adjustments to daily routines can make a big difference toward a greener mindset and a sustainable Earth.

“One person can’t solve the problem alone,” said Michelle about her colleagues’ pledges. “But working together, we can definitely make a big difference.”

ScienceFirst’s creative work was recently recognized by industry peers as being among the best product launches during 2011. The Art Directors Club of NJ (ADCNJ), a statewide, nonprofit organization, presented this award to ScienceFirst during the 49th Annual Award Show for the company’s work on Merck’s VictrelisTM launch.

The work showcased a variety of media, including video and still images, featuring two fencers, one representing the hepatitis C virus and the other representing Victrelis. The camera pans the globe and quickly comes to focus on Paris, and then the Pullman Hotel, where the Merck’s launch meeting is scheduled to take place. The fencers duel outside the hotel, and then inside, with the Victrelis fencer eventually emerging victorious.

Launched in the spring of 2011 to great acclaim in the marketplace, Victrelis is a groundbreaking drug developed to treat chronic HCV genotype 1 infection. It is in a class of drugs known as protease inhibitors, and is taken in combination with medicines known as peginterferon alfa and ribavirin; Victrelis should not be taken alone.

ADCNJ presented ScienceFirst with a “Silver Award” for its work on this project. The Art Directors Club of New Jersey is a member-based organization of art directors, graphic designers, illustrators, photographers, art educators, and other creative professionals whose talent and services contribute to excellence in the design and production of advertising, promotion, and publishing.

ScienceFirst Staff Volunteers at Soup Kitchen.

ScienceFirst is pleased to announce that employees of its Cedar Knolls office recently volunteered their time at The Community Soup Kitchen of Morristown.  On December 12, ScienceFirst staff members served food to more than 250 New Jersey residents in need.  The group spent over 3 hours at the soup kitchen, and all appreciated working for a company that let them take time out of their workday to help others. Besides serving the food, the group assisted with preparing the food, creating healthy portions, and communicating with those in need. Volunteering at the soup kitchen is the most recent example of how the ScienceFirst team gives back to its community.  Over the summer, team members volunteered with Morristown Habitat for Humanity to help build homes for two families in Denville, NJ.
